Algorithms control Playlists on Spotify, AI softwares like Endel, Aiva or IBM's Watson Beat are conquering the music market, supplying computer games with background music or providing sound wallpaper for yoga or for cleaning. Start-ups such as Amadeus Code, Amper or Alysia are developing applications that can already write lyrics, and US singer Taryn Southern has already recorded an entire album, very generic-sounding chart pop. How should artists deal with this upheaval? Is the new technology an asset to human creativity - or will artists soon become superfluous?
